Bowen Therapy

What is Bowen Therapy?

The Bowen technique is truly a holistic approach to healing – treating the whole body, where the body is encouraged to respond by stimulating its own natural healing abilities.

Highly subtle, yet profound using gentle light pressure, the Bowen technique was developed in 1950s by Tom Bowen from Geelong, Australia. Mr Bowen’s approach appears rather radical to our modern society where ‘more is better’ in comparison to his approach of ‘less is more’. This is very similar to the eastern world philosophy for example as followed in acupuncture, marital arts techniques.

The efficacy of the Bowen moves is attributed to its ability to re-balance the Autonomic Nervous System (ANS) which governs the body’s self-healing mechanism. The ANS controls over 80% of body functions which are very susceptible to the outer stresses of our modern life styles.

A series of precise gentle rolling motions over specific muscles, joints, ligaments and tendons affecting the facia and connective tissues informs the nervous system about the tension in the musculotendinous tissues, which thereby responds by breaking the tension and provides profound relaxation and restoration in the entire body.

How long is a Bowen Session?

A Bowen session lasts about 45 minutes to an hour depending upon a person’s sensitivity, health, nature of the condition and the areas of the body that are traumatised and how they respond to relaxation.

What happens during a Bowen Session?

Bowen treatment can be performed effectively over light clothing or directly on the skin, which is my preferred method. Client normally lies on the therapy table but can also sit on a chair or stand if unable to lie down, for example pregnant ladies may have problem lying down on the table. Full respect and care is given in maintaining the personal privacy of the clients.

After the initial consultation, I develop a treatment plan consisting of various moves. Between each set of moves I leave the room to allow the body to rest for few minutes. Generally I keep the communication to a minimum to allow the brain to leave the beta electrical pattern of ‘thinking and speaking’ such that it moves into the alpha state of rhythm ie to the ‘rest, repair and relax’ state and beyond. This way brain is released from the ‘sympathetic nerve dominance’ causing, stress, contraction & armouring response to ‘parasympathetic nerve dominance’ which causes relaxation, expansion, pleasure and release of tension so very essential for fully integrated healing.

How Many Sessions are required?

Normally 3 – 4 sessions spaced about 7 days apart are recommended for the body to reset and bring the mind and body back into balance. However, the number of sessions depends upon the client’s sensitivity, health, nature and recency of the condition. Chronic conditions can take longer.

For normal relaxation of the body one session with some follow up sessions are also recommended to spoil one self.
